An infographic focusing on the prevalence of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) amongst the Torrance patients at the Scots Mission Hospital in Tiberias, Palestine, in the 1920s. This project was completed for the University of Dundee Archives.

Project Brief

The project brief entails creating an infographic that utilizes the photographs of patients taken by Dr Herbert Watt Torrance during his time as the superintendent of the Scots Mission Hospital in Tiberias. The scope of this project was left open, allowing a lot of freedom as to what I could do for the content of the infographic.

The target audience was initially set for children but after some discussion with the client, it was decided that an adult audience would be more suitable due to the graphic nature and content of the photographs.

Planning

After going through the collection of photographs and conducting further research, I observed that many of the diseases depicted were classified as Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). As such, I decided to focus on the most prevalent NTDs treated at the Scots Mission Hospital during that time. To set the historical context and relevance, I illustrated the hospital entrance and its patients, using the photographs as reference to recreate the hospital scene during its operation. A few mock up designs were sketched out to get an overview of the final layout with the information and text.

Process

I sketched out and refined the outline for the final illustration. I filled the subjects with flat colours then created the background. For the background, colours were chosen to be more muted as to not take away from the main focus of the illustration, which were the patients. Then I rendered the details of the subjects, giving them shadows and highlights to create more depth in the illustration. The text was added through Illustrator.

Revision

Upon completion of the first draft, it was sent to the client for revision. The second draft included changes made to improve the context of the text to make it more concise and the connection of the background information on the Torrance family more relevant to the overall infographic. A second revision was done and changes included the addition of a nurse at the hospital entrance to create a more welcoming atmosphere and further consolidate the hospital environment.
