An illustration of the Padgett-Hood Dermatome (a rotary drum dermatome) used in skin grafting procedures mainly during the 1940s to the 1970s. The final illustration is contextualized in a journal article figure-like manner with captions to explain the general function of the surgical instrument.
Planning
I researched and sketched out different surgical instruments used over the history of skin grafting ranging from handheld knives to electric dermatomes and ultimately decided on illustrating the Padgett-Hood dermatome. I experimented with different perspectives and went with the 2-point perspective as it gave more depth and realistic representation of the 3D space.

Process
I sketched out an outline of the instrument that I then used as a guide to block out the general shape and values.
Details
I rendered the details using gradient meshes, allowing for the precise control of shading, to create depth and realism.
